QED Reference XT25 Speaker Cable Per Metre
The QED Reference XT25 Speaker Cable uses X-Tube™ technology which allows electrons to better flow towards the periphery of a conductor as the frequency increases, resulting in a thin layer on the outside of the cable being used if the frequency is high enough. This “Skin Depth” varies over different materials at a fixed frequency, and using copper means that a conductor with a cross sectional area that is larger than 0.66 mm squared will not have all of that area available for an analogue music signal to use. X-Tube™ has effectively eliminated this problem by placing all of the conducting material around a central hollow insulating rod. A.C signals that are changing magnetic fields generated by the flow of current set up eddy currents in nearby conductors, forcing the current to flow in only the furthest areas from the conductors carrying a current in the same direction and vice versa.
This is known as the “proximity effect”, and has a detrimental influence over the distribution of current within a speaker cable when utilising X-Tube™ technology. The the QED Reference XT25 Speaker Cable, the proximity effect and the skin effect has been dealt with using a combination of Aircore™ and X-Tube™ technologies into a new X-Tube variation that forms conductors into a tube-like shape with a hollow centre, thus allowing the electric field that contributes to the skin effect to act towards the centre of the conductor from where the conductive material has been removed, and maintain current densities at higher frequencies.
Instead of using a braided structure, the QED Reference XT25 Speaker Cable uses a ring of conductors in separate bundles – formed in order to maintain only a loose electrical association which – which have then been twisted into a 90mm lay, allowing no single conductor bundle to remain on the inside or outside of the cable for long enough to become an audible problem. The QED Reference XT25’s geometry allows it to promote signal distribution that is more consistent and provides a more accurate musical reproduction.
The QED Reference XT25 Speaker Cable will deliver a notable improvement over any cable in a similar price category, offering low DC resistance without increasing in size losing any of its flexibility. This has been made possible through the enlarging of the cable’s cross-sectional area to 2.5mm squared of 99.999% oxygen-free copper, instantly gaining a low DC resistance and producing a reproduction of sound that is much more accurate.
Electrical signals, when moving at the speed of light through a wire, do so through electromagnetic waveforms that exist within the dielectric surrounding the wire’s conductors and within the conductors themselves. Moving electrons will facilitate generation of electromagnetic waveforms with a drift velocity of only a few centimetres per second, which makes it important to ensure the dielectric material used in the insulation of the cable’s central conductors is of a type that will permit electromagnetic waveforms to be established without causing any appreciable loss. Dielectric loss is proportional to the permittivity of the material used and should be as close to unity as possible. The QED Reference XT25 uses a new low-density polyethylene (LDPE) dielectric that has been specifically formulated for this cable. The LDPE dielectric has the absolute lowest relative permittivity that is currently possible at 1.69. The use of this LPDE dielectric and careful control of conductor spacing has resulted in an intu
itive cable that offers a very low capacitance per metre and a dissipation factor of 0.0001 at 10 kHz.
All of our speaker cable is supplied unterminated (bare wire) unless stated otherwise. We do offer a Termination Service, for which we use high quality plugs as shown in the photo above. (If you order 8m, and order termination, we can terminate 4 x 4m lengths, if you order 10m, we can terminate 2 x 5m lengths, and so on). If you require terminated cable or want to chat about termination please call us to discuss terminating, including costs.
