History of Roberts Radio Products

Roberts Radio is a British consumer electronics company that has been designing and manufacturing high-quality radios for over 85 years. The company was founded in 1932 by Harry Roberts and Leslie Bidmead in London, England. Since then, Roberts Radio has become synonymous with premium radios, offering a wide range of products that cater to various audio needs.

Early Years (1932-1950)

In the early years, Roberts Radio focused on producing portable radios that were both functional and stylish. The company's first radio, the RT1, was introduced in 1932 and featured a wooden case with a Bakelite panel. This design set the standard for Roberts Radio products, as they continued to use high-quality materials and craftsmanship in their radios.

During World War II, radio production was halted, and the company shifted its focus to manufacturing components for the military. After the war, Roberts Radio resumed production and introduced several new models, including the RMB and RMB2, which featured a combination of battery and mains operation.

The Golden Age of Radio (1950-1970)

The 1950s and 1960s were considered the golden age of radio, and Roberts Radio thrived during this time. The company introduced several iconic models, such as the R200 and R300, which were known for their stylish design and excellent sound quality. The R200, launched in 1956, was a particularly popular model, featuring a leather-covered wooden case and a rotating waveband selector.

In 1962, Roberts Radio introduced the R600, the company's first transistor radio. This model marked a significant milestone, as it was more compact and energy-efficient than previous models. The R600 was followed by the R700, which featured a sleek, modern design that appealed to a younger audience.

The Rise of Digital Radio (1970-2000)

As technology continued to advance, Roberts Radio adapted to the changing market by introducing digital radios in the 1980s and 1990s. The company's first digital radio, the RD50, was launched in 1984 and featured a digital display and presets for easy station selection.

In 1995, Roberts Radio introduced the Gemini range, which included the company's first DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio. The Gemini series was well-received and helped establish Roberts Radio as a leader in digital radio technology.

The 21st Century (2000-Present)In the 21st century, Roberts Radio has continued to innovate and expand its product range. The company now offers a wide variety of radios, including internet radios, Bluetooth speakers, and smart radios with built-in voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa.

In 2002, Roberts Radio was granted a Royal Warrant by Her Majesty The Queen, a testament to the company's long-standing commitment to quality and excellence.
