The Rega Aura MC Phono Stage is the peak of electronic design development that spans several decades. We have manufactured the ultimate fully variable three stage. All symmetrical pre amplifier solely for the purpose of getting the most out of your moving coil cartridge and vinyl play back system.
Rega Aura MC Phono Stage
In a completely re designed custom case, the Rega Aura MC Phono Stage is all about moving coil cartridges and therefore focuses entirely on that without compromises. The Aura phono pre-amp unites outstanding and innovative design concepts. Vinyl fans will find the Aura MC an absolute necessity for demonstrations
Outstanding Sound Reproduction
The sole purpose of this device is to search and bring out the details of the music. No frequency comes from a sound source because Rega provides the longest path of a clear signal and uses only the best elements or manufacturing parts. That is why the listener gets the purest form of soundwave with enhanced clarity and outstanding sound reproduction.
Unveiling Musical Details with Precision
The first stage is a class A amplifier, symmetrical and complementary. It features a parallel connection of low noise FET (Field Effect Transistor) transistors of Linear Systems brand. Configured as a symmetrical compound pair input stage. Employing FET transistors means there is no bias current through the cartridge coil. Thus not disturbing the sensitive magnetic geometry of the cartridge.
Also, the input circuit configuration removes the necessity of any coupling components between the cartridge output and the input stage FET transistors. Which would compromise the sound. The complementary ultra low noise FET transistors are thoroughly sorted and matched to achieve optimum performance. This stage provides the passive RIAA equalisation stage with the high frequency part.
Crafting the Perfect Listening Atmosphere
The subsequent stage is a mirror image, class A, differential amplifier with a common base driver stage. This is also the main amplifier in the low frequency portion of the RIAA equalisation stage.
The output production is balanced by the signal being inverted by the third stage along with the output of the second stage. The third stage employs the same circuit topology as used in the second stage. The power supply is a symmetrical, discrete tracking power supply with fast diodes and a low noise voltage reference. Each stage is provided with its own localised power supply and LED referenced current generators.
To maximise head room. The Aura has a power supply voltage that is 60% higher than what is usually found in such a pre amplifier. Very high quality, polypropylene capacitors have been used in the signal path.
1% tolerance polypropylene capacitors actors’ are used in the RIAA EQ stages and audio grade capacitors in the rest of the circuit. Gain, Mute and Mono switching functions are carried out by high quality relays.
Features and Benefits
- Exceptional Sound Quality: Enables the vinyl’s spirit to be the essence of vinyl. With every sound.
- Advanced Circuit Design: Handcrafted specifically. To increase the performance of moving coil (MC) cartridges.
- Highly Adjustable Settings: This option allows users to adjust the phono stage and is east to use. With a wide range of cartridges.
- Robust Construction: It contains high grade components. We can be certain that it will work for many years and deliver the quality expected.
- Noise Reduction Technology: It not only disconnects the noise sources of the music. Which allows your ears to hear the sound more but it also turns it into a pure music form.
Summary of the Rega Aura MC Phono Stage
The gain setting switch chooses the voltage gain of your phono amplifier. Gain I picks 69.5 dB (switch out) and Gain II picks 63.5 dB (switch in). These will deliver an input sensitivity of 67 μV and 131 μV respectively for an output level of 200 mV unbalanced and 400 mV balanced. The balanced output is practically 6 dB higher than the unbalanced output.
It is a good idea to use the lower gain setting II first and then increase the gain level to I if more level is required for low output cartridges. Since the balanced output is practically 6 dB higher, it might be a good idea to choose gain II setting when using the balanced output. This will, however, also depend a lot on the sensitivity of the connected amplifier.
Capacitance Settings
You can choose from five different input capacitance settings: 1000 pF, 2000 pF, 3200 pF, 4300 pF & 5700 pF, pick the capacitance that matches the one specified by the manufacturer in the cartridge specifications. It is allowable to experiment with different loadings. Because sometimes changing the capacitance can give a different musical performance that may be more to your liking;
The same goes if there is no loading capacitance specified by the manufacturer. To match some ‘legacy’ pre amplifiers, set 5700 pF, the 1000 pF setting is optimised for the Rega range of MC cartridges.
