Leak has finally unveiled their first streaming DAC, named the Leak TruStream Network Streamer. This new introduction is the next step after the Stereo 130 and Stereo 230 integrated amplifiers, the CDT CD transport and the Sandwich loudspeaker. It was necessary to give a complete makeover to these and other Leak products after the brand was resurrected in 2020.
Leak TruStream Network Steamer
The design of the TruStream is very much one with the other members of the range on which it draws visually. Exterior walnut veneered case hides a unit inside the aluminium chassis. The design was inspired by the Stereo 30 amplifier of 1963.
In fact this retro design is the very signature of Leak’s comeback. Owners of the brand’s amplifiers or transports will have a visually no trouble at all fitting the TruStream into their current setup.
Silent Angel Streaming Platform
The core of Leak TruStream Network Streamer is the streaming platform from Silent Angel. The same sole streaming platform is the main reason of Mission 778S facility. Both Leak and Mission are two sister brands of the same parent company IAG. The streaming software is a custom build based on Silent Angel’s VitOS platform. Control apps for iOS and Android are available.
It is very likely that you will not really have to use the app because the service integration covers Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, TuneIn, Roon Ready, Apple AirPlay 2, and DLNA/UPnP..
Connectivity
In addition to network streaming that can be done through Gigabit Ethernet or dual-band Wi-Fi, the PC/Mac can also be connected through the USB-C port on the front panel. The main analog outputs are balanced XLR and single-ended RCA. Whereas the headphone output is a 6.35mm jack. TOSLINK and coaxial digital outputs are also provided. 12V trigger input and link output are additional.
Among really thoughtful features is that the USB-A ports are not only the means to connect a USB storage device for local music playback. But also you can use these ports as digital outputs to an external DAC. So you actually get a USB slot with two functions.
Toroidal Transformer
Leak says that one of the main differences of the TruStream from the Mission 778S is the power supply. A Noratel toroidal transformer is used instead of the one employed in the 778S, with dedicated supplies for the XMOS chip, MCU and DAC stage.
ESS ES9038Q2M DAC
The DAC utilizes an ESS ES9038Q2M chip paired with a Class A post-DAC filter. It supports PCM audio signals up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD audio up to DSD512 at native rate.
