The Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers take design cues from the original Leak Sandwich speaker that was first launched in 1961. This 2 way stand mount speaker is meant to complement the vintage-styled Leak audio units. The line was brought back in 2020 with all new electronics.
Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers
The sandwich term is taken from the bass/midrange driver’s makeup. The woofer is particularly a 170mm unit and the tweeter a 30mm textile domed one. Finally, the cabinet design is a nod to the original style while employing entirely modern materials.
Sandwich bass/midrange driver
The initial Sandwich bass/midrange driver diaphragm was a “sandwich” of polystyrene foam sandwiched between two sheets of aluminium foil. A light but very stiff construction that helped keep distortion at bay. Consequently, the audio was more natural and faithful.
The present-day one has a thin aluminium outer layer glued to a core of aircraft-grade polymethacrylimide (PMI) structural foam. This lead to an extremely rigid construction.
Sound and Looks in Harmony
This careful, precisely engineered use of the most appropriate materials in the right proportions and arrangements results in tremendous stiffness. Hence, the Leak Sandwich cone accurately follows the input signal to the voice coil without any mechanical break-up or distortions related to that.
Sandwich Bass-Midrange Driver
The outcome is an impressively smooth frequency response without any drastic peaks or dips over an Sandwich bass/midrange driver. Which is a sign of a great transient response. Often, the impact of the loudspeaker enclosure (cabinet) on the total acoustical performance is not fully appreciated. Its design calls for as much electroacoustic understanding as the motor units themselves.
Over 60 Years of Technological Progress
The new Leak Sandwich cabinet incorporates 60 years’ worth of technological progress after the original. The makeup is a blend of MDF and composite board, hence resulting in a second ‘sandwich’ analogy. The boards being arranged for utmost cabinet strength.
Front Rear Bracing
Besides the new cabinet bringing together smart bracing with this ‘sandwich’ of materials. It also preserves a particular front-rear bracing, with the distinct, visible countersunk screw at the back that was a hallmark of the original. Technology in Leak audio products gives heaps of science and innovation, but it’s often their industrial design that gets popular attention.
Outstanding Sound Reproduction
This innovation not only isolates the HF unit from the rest of the loudspeaker. It has the added benefit of reducing the resonant frequency of the treble unit. Taking the resonant frequency below the crossover region means the audible spectrum of the bass. Mid and high frequencies can be sewn together with an added dimension of detail and harmonics. Eliminating the requirement to harshly adjust the definition of the high-frequencies.
And that very sewing is conducted by a crossover of the highest order. Developed over thousands of hours of listening. Not just simulation as is the tendency in modern loudspeaker design. The Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers comes in the format of a 2-way standmount loudspeaker with a combination of 6.5” (170mm) low-frequency ‘Sandwich’ driver and a 1.2” (30mm) coated textile dome high-frequency driver.

Conclusion of the Leak Sandwich 150 Bookshelf Speakers
It is a fact that speakers produce sound, but the speaker cabinet (speaker housing). That it is often overlooked in terms of its effect on the overall sound quality of the system. Designing a cabinet marvellously requires just as much electroacoustic skill as designing the motor units themselves.
Over 60 Years of Inovation
The new Leak Sandwich 150 cabinet have been through the 60 years evolution of the technology since the originals. Their frame is a combination of MDF and composite board, this is why there is a second ‘sandwich’ reference. It is the boards which are layered to give the cabinet the best strength along with the first one.
Although the new cabinet, besides the intelligent bracing, merges these ‘sandwich’ materials. It retains the specific front-rear bracing, to be exact, with the unmistakable, visible countersunk screw on the back. This is the famous characteristic of the original.
