In that area, the record also has one of the few hand-numbered copies (out a total run of 5,000). In the rear, we can see an illustration of a young black girl with a basket of flowers (the same girl can be seen on a later issue of the LP). The front artwork is rather plain and is just showing a close-up of Shinn’s keyboard playing.
Don Shinn has played a wide variety of musical genres. His first major successes in jazz, blues, and rock, were all with his own original compositions, and some covers of well known standard jazz songs, such as “Satin Doll,” “All or Nothing at All,” and “If You Could See Her Through My Eyes.”
His second album, “Departures,” was the product he had to wait the longest for, as it took him two years to complete and only one of his six recordings has since had another pressing. The record was only released as a limited edition 5, 000 hand-numbered copies on a black vinyl.
Wealth of Orchestral Arrangements
The RSD 2020 remake of “Departures” is a revival of the Don Shinn era of a man who brought light to us the world. The album highlights once again the enduring power of vinyl as a vehicle for remembering a repertoire of music which would otherwise be completely forgotten.
This album is unique not only because of its rich orchestration. But also by its openness to the experimental direction. It serves as a clear evidence of the rejection of the hitherto unchallenged conservative music dogma. It is also very heavy on record shopping aspect. Which means that you will have brief yet rich music listening moments.
Don Shinn’s second and final album was made in London’s Lansdowne Studios only a few months after his classic debut. Featuring a more jazzy and experimental side to his remarkable organ playing (a clear influence on the young Keith Emerson). A band including jazz legend Stan Tracey, it has its first official reissue here. Fifty years after its first release.
It comes complete with detailed background notes. Rare images and three newly recorded bonus tracks that make it clear that the maestro has lost none of his touch.

User Comment
In my opinion, Don Shinn’s “Departures” RSD reissue will become one of the masterpieces of my vinyl collection. Shinn has mixed together the sparse elements of jazz, psychedelia. Experimental noise and created an emotional cocktail in his organ genius. That is at the same time nostalgic and new. I’m convinced that holding this album is a great piece of musical history for myself.
