David Bowie – The World Of David Bowie 12 Inch Vinyl (RSD 2019) is an absolutee gem. It is the time before Bowie became one of the biggest characters on a stadium stage, as well before he began to wear makeup and do dramatic stage acts as Ziggy Stardust.
On this album you’ll hear him trying out new kinds of voices and different musical styles. Even changing his stage name during recording sessions.
David Bowie – The World Of David Bowie 12 Inch Vinyl (RSD 2019)
It is the way Bowie built the tools he needed to work his magic throughout the rest of his career. The record leans towards the atmosphere of late 60s. It is like being surrounded by colorful sounds, pop melodies.
But also unexpected and funny lyrics. It is all of the London’s street life at that time, club musicians dreaming of greatness. Plus, short songs with big ideas that can change your life.
If you know Bowie mostly as a singer of ‘Let’s Dance’ or ‘Ziggy Stardust’. This release is your ticket to the past. It does not feature Bowie at his peak. But rather, it is a showcase of growth and evolution. As such it is incredibly revealing.
What It Sounds Like on a Turntable
You will definitely hear a much lighter sound than the later works of David Bowie which is a good thing. The guitars produce a more acoustic sound without really getting heavy on the distortion. When strings and horns suddenly become prominent on a track it may seem like a brushstroke of a painter in your head.
Vocals have a pure and clean sound and a young voice that is experimenting for new ways to sing. Recording style of this time was different too. A few songs sound very polished and others are more relaxed. Tape noise, the natural echoes of rooms, and all that are very likely to be on your record.
Who This Record Fits Best
A perfect fit for avid collectors and adventurous hearers. Who would appreciate getting a different perspective from Bowie through a “side road” recording. It is a great window to the development of his later works.
It also appeals to the so-called “scene” records kind of music that sounds a bit like a time and a place combination. Play it during a peaceful evening to enjoy the atmosphere. It gives together with reading books, drinking coffee and having an opportunity to be in silence.
This record covers very little from Bowie’s most famous songs, but on the other hand. It gives lots of context and understanding through deep roots of his music, especially if you have an interest in the origins of his works.

User Comment
I got this one because I was after that “baby David Bowie” stage and not another copy of the most popular records. It looks like a patchwork quilt of his first ideas. Here and there, the style is quite unusual, or the melody quite charming with all taken together that later works of his seem even more connected.
