DTS:X and Dolby Atmos soundtracks are supported, and compliment the latest 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video standards via HDMI pass-through. This pass-through supports 4K/60p, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, and BT.2020 colour standards. The TX-NR686 features cross-compatible 3D audio up-mixing solutions from Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X, which means you are now able to enjoy regular multi-channel movies in an impressive and spatially immersive sound.

Connectivity options throughout the Onkyo TX-NR686 provide all you could possibly need to experience your favourite content throughout different rooms and different speakers seamlessly. Cast your music from mobile devices to this AVR and other compatible systems throughout your home via built-in Chromecast, DTS Play-Fi technology, or FlareConnect wireless multi-room platforms. On top of these intuitive connectivity solutions, the TX-NR686 also incorporates AirPlay for all compatible Apple products and Bluetooth technology. This Bluetooth technology enables you to achieve a seamless connection to Bluetooth enabled devices, allowing you to stream from any online music streaming service or simply play music through your own personal library stored on your device.

Connections and 4K Support

The Onkyo TX-NR686 AVR will support 4K HDR, BT.2020, 4K/60 Hz, and HDCP 2.2 pass-through via the rear HDMI inputs. These inputs will handle BT.202 playback and HDCP 2.2 for premium content. The front HDMI ports will allow you to connect video cameras and consoles, and the rear Sub Out will allow you to connect a projector easily.

Dolby Atmos

The sole intention of Dolby Atmos is to make it feel as though you are truly in the middle of all the action. Providing a clarity, power, detail and depth to your home theatre that is truly astonishing, Dolby Atmos is the first home theatre system that has been based on audio objects rather channels. This means that filmmakers are able to decide where the sounds should originate from and where abouts they should move to as the scene progresses. DTS:X

The next generation in audio codec from DTS, DTS:X leverages object-based audio to enable immersive and interactive audio experiences. This technology is able to automatically adapt to the existing channels and speaker systems already in your home theatre setup, meaning no specific speaker layout is required. DTS:X will allow you to experience an immersive soundscape with incredibly rich and life-like audio.

DTS Play-Fi

DTS Play-Fi is a technology that will allow you to wirelessly stream any audio content from compatible devices to compatible DTS Play-Fi audio systems. This will enable the Onkyo TX-NR686 to create a multi-room system within your home, allowing you to stream different source to different speakers. Control over the multi-room system can be achieved via the available Pioneer remote app.

Google Chromecast Built-In

Chromecast is also built-in, enabling you to use your mobile device in order to stream music, radio or podcasts directly to your speaker. Control of the audio can be achieved from anywhere in the house using Chromecast-enabled apps running on your personal device - iPad, iPhone, Android phone or tablet, Mac or Windows laptop, and Chromebook. Streaming can also be achieved through the use of DTS Play-Fi. Through any compatible mobile device connected to the unit and any DTS Play-Fi-compatible audio systems, creation of a multi-room system will be easy. Different sources can be streamed to different speakers at the same time as well.

Wireless Multi-Room Audio via FlareConnect™

FlareConnect™ technology makes it possible to share audio via network and external audio input sources between compatible components. This makes it possible to achieve a multi-room connection and playback of records, CDs, network music services, and supported speaker systems and Hi-Fi components. 

Bluetooth and AirPlay

Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay connectivity technologies are included with the TX-NR686 in order to make your listening options as seamless and as far-reaching as possible. Bluetooth will allow you to connect to any Bluetooth compatible devices, offering the ability to stream all of your favourite music via any online music streaming service, or simply via the music library on your connected device.

Apple AirPlay is a connectivity technology created by Apple to enable users easy connection to any Apple device. AirPlay works by wirelessly streaming between audio devices, video devices, and device screens. AirPlay will let you stream content from your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone to the TX-NR686.

Internet radio is also included, offering thousands of radio stations for you to enjoy. Subscription music services such as Spotify, DEEZER and Tidal are also available.

Onkyo Controller

Onkyo Controller is a free app that is available for Apple and Android. The app works to gain control over your system via compatible devices, and allows you to use your iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch or Android device to alter the volume, change track, and even enables you to manage the multi-room functionality of the TX-NR686. With a user friendly interface, this control app will make it so much easier to control multi-room speaker designations from the comfort of your armchair.
