-Monitor Audio C280-IDC In-Ceiling Speaker - Product Description

3-Way Speaker

The new Monitor Audio C280-IDC In-Ceiling Speaker features an 8 inch C-CAM bass driver and pivoting module that houses a 4 inch C-CAM RST inverted midrange driver and a 1 inch C-CAM gold dome tweeter, creating a true 3-way design that can provide a rich midrange detail, higher system output, impressive power handling, and a vocal intelligibility and sound localisation that has been vastly improved upon.

Inverted Dual Concentric (IDC) Module

This in-ceiling speaker uses a unique pivoting Inverted Dual Concentric (IDC) midrange/tweeter to angle them up/down or left/right. This will enable the in-ceiling speaker to be positioned discreetly, allowing the sound to be directed towards the listening area. With this IDC module installed, the Monitor Audio C280-IDC In- Ceiling Speaker will offer a performance that is unparalleled and will also ensure greater flexibility over typical 2-way or fixed angle speakers. Within the IDC module, an inverted 4” midrange driver can be found. This driver provides superior dispersion and enables the midrange cone and tweeter dome assembly to be set as far forward as possible, which in turn allows for clear acoustics within your listening space with reduced diffraction effects.

C-CAM Gold-Dome Tweeter

The gold-dome tweeter in the Monitor Audio C280-IDC In-Ceiling Speaker has been formed using a ceramic coated aluminium/magnesium alloy, and gold that has been anodized to a specific thickness in order to remains stiff and offer better damping characteristics. The new sound profile and surround geometry will provide the best possible qualities when it comes to accurate sound reproduction thanks to the advanced modelling tools used in their construction. This new design also moves the first order of breakup to more than 35kHz, which allows the in-ceiling speaker to produce a linear response that is far beyond audibility, matching the wide frequency bandwidth that is available in HD music and home cinema sound formats. This gold-dome tweeter has been made thinner, lighter, and much more rigid, making it more efficient than domes made from materials that have been proven to be more susceptible to distortion within the audio band.

C-CAM Cone Midrange and Bass Driver

The Monitor Audio C280-IDC In-Ceiling Speaker uses Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium, a material that was originally developed for the construction of jet engine components. Once formed, this midrange cone was subjected to a high-temperature anodic coating process, depleting a layer of pure ceramic alumina onto its surface to a depth of 50 microns, resulting in a completely rigid sandwich of alloy and heat-dissipating ceramic metal. More conventional cones are more susceptible to audible distortion due to flexing and twisting in operation. C-CA, cones boast a much higher resistance level to bending stress, resulting in much greater fidelity over the entire speaker’s operating range.

Rigid Surface Technology

The Monitor Audio C280-IDC In- Ceiling Speaker’s inverted midrange driver uses Rigid Surface Technology (RTS) in conjunction with the C-CAM cone woofer design in order to achieve a stronger and lighter cone. This RTS cone profile uses small and precise folds on the surface in order to make it more rigid, a method demonstrated in the Japanese art of Origami. Sophisticated computer modelling (Finite Element Analysis) has been used in the development of these midbass drivers, strengthening them through a pattern of dimples. RST will significantly increase the rigidity of the cones, allowing the radiating surfaces to resist mechanical bending forces, which would otherwise twist the shape of a more conventional driver cone – thus producing distorted sound.  These RST strengthening characteristics allows this in-ceiling speaker to use thinner, lighter, and much more responsive C-CAM cones to provide speed and accuracy in performance, all with greatly decreased levels of distortion. RST also helps to displace any standing waves that would propagate on the surface of the cone.

Spring-Post Terminals

The Monitor Audio C280-IDC features a pair of gold-plated spring-post terminals to connect the speaker wire. The spring-post terminals accept bare wire up to 10AWG, banana plugs (single/dual), and angled pin-connectors.

Trimless Magnetic Grille and Tri-Grip Fixing System

This in-Ceiling speakers employs a steel-mesh grille that is held in place by high strength neodymium magnets in order to cover the entire speaker for a truly trimless appearance. On top of that, the grille is also paintable in order to become virtually invisible in your home décor if you so wish it.

The Tri-Grip fixing system makes it so much easier to install the Monitor Audio C280-IDC In-Ceiling Speaker than it would be with other in-ceiling speakers.  Providing three times the amount of surface area and an improved surface seal, the Tri-Grip fixing system will maximise the bass response and midrange clarity of your speaker. Tri-Grip fixings are made using a tough reinforced polymer for a secure installation.
