History of Magneplanar Loud Speakers

Magneplanar, a brand under Magnepan Incorporated, is a renowned manufacturer of high-quality, innovative loudspeakers. The company's journey began in 1969 when engineer Jim Winey founded Magnepan in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Winey's vision was to create a new type of speaker that would deliver unparalleled sound quality and performance. This led to the development of the Magneplanar speaker technology, which has since become synonymous with high-fidelity audio reproduction.

The Early Years (1969-1970s)

In the late 1960s, Jim Winey, an electrical engineer with a passion for music, began experimenting with electrostatic loudspeakers. He was inspired by the sound quality of the Quad ESL-57, an electrostatic speaker invented by Peter Walker. However, Winey believed that he could improve upon the design and performance of these speakers.

Winey's innovation was to replace the electrostatic diaphragm with a thin, lightweight Mylar film, which was bonded with a conductive material. This new design allowed for the creation of a large, flat-panel speaker that could reproduce a wide range of frequencies with minimal distortion. The result was the first Magneplanar speaker, which was patented in 1971.

Growth and Expansion (1980s-1990s)

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Magnepan continued to refine and expand its product lineup. The company introduced several new models, such as the MG-III, the MG-20, and the MG-1.6, which were well-received by both audiophiles and professional reviewers. These speakers featured various improvements, such as the use of ribbon tweeters for high-frequency reproduction and the use of quasi-ribbon technology for midrange and bass frequencies.

During this time, Magnepan also expanded its international presence, with Magneplanar speakers becoming available in markets around the world. The company's reputation for producing high-quality, innovative products continued to grow, and Magneplanar speakers became a sought-after choice for discerning audio enthusiasts.

The 21st Century (2000s-Present)

In the 21st century, Magnepan has continued to innovate and expand its product offerings. The company introduced the Mini Maggie System, a compact desktop speaker system that delivers the same high-quality sound as its larger counterparts. Additionally, Magnepan has released several new models, such as the MG-3.7, the MG-20.7, and the MG-.7, which have garnered praise for their performance and value.

Conclusion

Throughout its history, Magneplanar has remained committed to its founding principles of innovation, quality, and performance. The company's dedication to producing exceptional loudspeakers has earned it a loyal following among audiophiles and music lovers alike. As Magnepan continues to develop new technologies and products, the Magneplanar brand remains synonymous with high-fidelity audio reproduction.
