Surely you need to get someone else to blow the whistle, if you do it the pressure build up inside your sinus/ear cavities is going to change the sound.

I'd like to see anyone say that after hearing the first two tracks of The Social Network soundtrack....amazing.

I could imagine them being painful if they sounded shite, but it simply is not the case. Whoever said it, is obviously some nonce that simply cannot afford such a pair of speakers - and let's face it, there are many.

Not a forum, but eBay. Some B&W 600 series speakers up for auction. One of the metal dome tweeters is completely mangled and pushed in. The description reads:

Quote:
These are high quality speakers that are in very good condition - but please note that although in very good condition, one tweeter (on left in the photo) has finger damage. A Bang & Olufsen technician and installer says it is producing high frequencies but there could be some sound deterioration to the trained ear when pressing the ear close to the tweeter. Otherwise not noticeable in the room under normal listening conditions.

Not noticeable?! One of my kids made a dent not much bigger than a screw head on an old pair of speakers I had many years ago, and they gave me a headache listening to them! And as for the BO technician - "could be some sound deterioration"?!! If a poked in tweeter sounded any good, every manufacturer would be using poked in tweeters! (yes, I know Focal do!). I think said technician needs to understand how speaker's work....

Guess which product is being described here ....

"To me the top end was steely and bit hard, mid was bit closed in recessed and I was conscious of the sound coming from two places, not one "wall" of sound. The bass though did seem impressive and like few others, very tight, deep, powerfull and controlled. They didn't hold my attention sadly. "

Just read the thread - funny :)

Who wants a "wall of sound"? A wall is flat - I want a soundstage with depth and projection! Maybe his speakers produce a flat wall of sound, but the Blades certainly don't!

Everyone is going to have an opinion on any speaker, and the problem there is that their opinion is going to be heavily influenced by what they're used to hearing. As with ATC, many people aren't used to hearing a low distortion loudspeaker, so when they hear them, they don't like it because it sounds different to what they're used to hearing - disortion! Most people are used to speakers with a fair amount of cabinet resonance as well, which will colour the sound to an extent, and because the Blades have no cabinet resonance, they can sound 'odd' to many people. I feel it's a case that people have to understand the technology behind them in order to appreciate everything they're doing, or not doing. Before anyone quotes me, I know that a speaker's strengths should be apparent to everyone, but some people can't tell the difference between amplifiers or CD payers, or see the difference between DVD and Bluray, so a certain amount of education IS needed.

Once again, people are making a lot of assumptions about Cyrus. Usually, it's by people who have heard a £700 Cyrus integrated amplifier from 2004. Things have changed!! Cyrus have improved greatly, and it's only those who can be bothered to have an audition that will realise this change.

As for the comments about the Blades on the evening, I don't think they realise (nor has someone mentioned), that this took place on the shop floor, not in a dedicated demo room. The Blades, for us, weren't the main event, they were a bonus for people to hear. The evening was all about streaming from Cyrus and Naim, and AV from Arcam, KEF, Bryston, and PMC. These all had dedicated demo rooms.

Another thing that no one is taking into account on that thread is the fact that we're situated in a 500 year old "wobbly" building, not a small, relatively solid normal living room. All rooms will have adverse effects on loudspeakers, but ours tends to have different effects that rooms with concrete floors and solid walls. And yes, as mentioned, the Blades were surrounded by other speakers - in fact, about about 35 pairs!

And let's not forget that there will be some people commenting that really just don't like Cyrus or KEF as a brand, have no interest in them, haven't heard them for years, and as we've seen, make assumptions or have a pop. That's fine, but see how they react when you criticise a product they own...

"My current setup consists of Cyrus DAC XP + PSX-R, X-Power, and B&W CM1 speakers. Whilst the treble and mids are beautifully sweet with great separation and "air" between instruments so you can hear each individual element (improved a lot by the addition of the PSXR on the DAC), I don't get the same clarity/definition with the bass."

"I feel that in the first instance you should look at alternative makes of pre amplification."

Almost lost the will to live by the time I got to the end of the WHF thread. Can't believe a certain hifi retailer from Derby would give such flippant advice.

I suppose its partially understandable as he doesn't stock Cyrus (and neither likely to), although that's no excuse for recommending the OP changes his strongest component!

Not partially understandable at all. People are only qualified to give advice on matters with which they are familiar. Otherwise they are unqualified opinions an not advice!!

This is true, and I think it's one of the biggest negatives of forums, along with direct selling, 'everything else is poop' manufacturers that claim they're right and everyone else is wrong. I'm not against people who reply based on their own genuine experiences, and I'm also not against those that give an opinion, as long as it's not disguised as a recommendation based on knowledge. What I don't like about forums are those that just repeat what they've read - there's no harm done if it's correct information, but when absolute rubbish is being spread by word of mouth, it doesn't do the manufacturer, retailers, or consumers any good at all. I bet there's a high number of people out there, newcomers and long term users, that avoid certain brands because of what other people have said about them. As an example, how many people have said on WHF that they're looking for a 5.1 speaker package to go with their AV receiver, but have heard that a particular combination (usually Monitor Audio and Pioneer) is bright?! Absolute nonsense. The worst of it is when a retailer says it, as people are more inclined to believe it - even if the retailer doesn't deal with one of the brands...

Or when certain hifi mags [understandably] favour products from their main advertisors and people buy solely on their recommendation.

There is no equivalent of the FSA for hifi advice!! Thankfully we've got Dave to come to our rescue.

I try!

There's lots more I'd love to say about this, but it wouldn't be forum friendly, and I'd probably get in trouble

"I'm looking for a new turntable - what would you recommend?"

"Aah, you need active speakers."
