What are cookies?
Cookies are pieces of information generated by a web server
and stored in your computer, ready for future access. Cookies
are embedded in the HTML information flowing back and forth between
the your computer and the web servers. Cookies were implemented to
allow user-side customisation of web information. They
can be used to personalise your experience on a website to perhaps
welcome you back by name or to store your username and
password to automatically allow you access without having to log
in every time. A cookie can hold various amounts of information such
as storing a lists of items you have selected to purchase or the
pages you have visited on a particular site.
Because a cookie can hold so much information which is transmitted
back to a webserver
without your knowledge, some internet users quite rightly are suspicious
of cookies and their use. Many people choose to turn off their browsers
ability to handle cookies while others prefer to approve (or not)
a cookie as it is set on their computer.
Why are cookies
used on Hifix.co.uk?
When you visit www.hifix.co.uk a cookie is set
on your computer, this cookie holds a Session ID number.
This number is unique to you while you are browsing the
website, and should you decide to add anything to your
basket, those items are referenced with your Session
ID number, therefore the webserver knows that items X,
Y and Z with your Session number need to be displayed
in your basket page.
Should you then decide to purchase the items in your
basket, your Session ID is saved against your name,
address and credit card details. This way your complete
order can be referenced with just one number, however
because the Session ID number is so long we only use
the last 10 digits as your Order ID. The Order ID is
the number you see in your email confirmation and the
number you use when you contact us with any queries.
Your email will look like this example:
HIFIX Order Code :: 56AE74U593
To alert you of any potential failure of this site, we
also attempt to set a cookie to check whether
your computer can accept cookies. This is merely a flag
that we can check for and if the cookie has failed to
set, the webserver will alert you on the basket page.
What
information is stored in the Hifix cookies?
To make sure your basket contents don't get mixed
up with another persons contents the Session ID needs
to be a mixture of numbers and characters to provide
a reference ID with hundreds of thousands permutations.
That way there is absolute certainty that the Session
ID is unique to you at that moment. Here is an example of a Session
ID:
